Swimming as a life skill: the role of swim schools in education

Swimming is more than just a sport or pastime – it’s a vital life skill that underpins personal safety, health, and wellbeing. At the Australian Swim Schools Association (ASSA), we champion the integration of learn-to-swim education within the broader educational framework, ensuring every child in Australia and New Zealand has access to high-quality swim education.

The Australian Swim Schools Association was invited to provide the cover article for the swimming section of the March 2025 edition of Education Australia Resource Guide. This national resource, published bi-annually, is distributed across primary schools, high schools, TAFEs, and universities Australia-wide.

In this feature, ASSA highlights the critical importance of swim education in fostering a water-safe nation. With over 90% of Australians living within 50 kilometres of the coast, it’s crucial that every child has the opportunity to learn vital water safety and swimming skills. ASSA’s advocacy efforts are focused on ensuring greater accessibility to swim education, especially in regional and remote areas, as well as addressing the impact of COVID-19 on swimming competency among children.

Our goal is to make swimming a fundamental part of every child’s learning experience, ensuring that all Australian children, regardless of their background or location, have the skills and confidence to enjoy aquatic activities safely.
